Kitten Season…We need you MEOW!

Kitten season is upon us!

Cats have litters all year round, however, there is a dramatic increase during the warmer months from spring to fall. This increase has a significant impact on rescues and animal control that are already experiencing a year-round capacity crisis.

Cats go into multiple heat cycles per breeding season, which means they can have multiple litters each season! Please consider TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return). S.A.F.E. is an affordable spay/neuter clinic nearby!

Things to consider when you find kittens:

It is not always in the best interest to remove kittens from their nest. Many well-intentioned people “rescue” kittens that they mistakenly think are abandoned. They often do not survive. Their mother may be nearby. Watch from a distance. She may return to her babies hours later. “Mom is best suited to provide the best care for them. Mom cat milk is much better quality than kitten milk replacement. She’s able to keep them warm, stimulate them to pee and poop, and help them learn to be cats.” - HumanePro

If the kittens look fed and healthy and/or you’ve seen the mother return, please wait and let her do her job. You can support her with high calorie food nearby. Once the kittens are weaned, they can be captured for adoption or “TNR’d” (Trapped, Neutered, Returned) once they are old enough. Also, make sure mother gets spayed as well!

If the kittens truly appear abandoned (if they are sick, cold and/or you have not observed a mother return) please help them. Move them to a safe, warm place. Reach out to a local rescue organization for guidance. Visit kittenlady.org and learn how to properly bottle/syringe feed along with much more care information.
